Welcome to Buddy's Song
The sound of running feet was what alerted Buddy to his visitor. He slid out from beneath the truck and pushed his cap up off his face just as the runner, a girl of about five or six with long red hair streaming out behind her, entered the workshop.
"Hey there," he said as she skidded to a halt. "What's mom told you about not running in here?"
The girl pouted. "Not to."
"Then don't," he advised. "Or mom'll tell you off again."
The girl pouted again and sighed. "OK."
Buddy slowly shook his head, chuckling. "Just like your mom." He wiped his hands on an oily rag and stood up. "So what's up?" he asked.
The sulks suddenly forgotten, the girl beamed. "They're coming! Mom says they'll be here soon, and that you need to get cleaned up."
"Mom would," Buddy replied, grinning all the same. "Tell her I'll be in to clean up in five minutes. I just need to finish what I'm doing."
"Promise?" asked the girl, giving him a scrutinising look.
Buddy laughed. "Promise," he confirmed. "I just need to put the oil filter back. That's it."
"OK." The girl headed out of the workshop, visibly trying not to run.
Chuckling, Buddy turned back to the truck and started to fit the oil filter. Sometimes, it was a little hard to believe just how well things had turned out. Sure, it had been a struggle sometimes, but then, as Mac had once said, nothing worthwhile was ever easy. And it has been worthwhile, he mused.
Perhaps, the hardest part to believe was that it had all begun twenty years ago. It really didn't feel like it. Buddy snickered as he tightened the nuts securing the filter in place. I was young, dumb and in a whole world of trouble, he recalled. Except I didn't know just how much until after I met Matt…

That meant he was on his own and, worse, he was going to have to go and serve the customer. )

( On the one hand, they had been extraordinarily lucky in San Diego. Had it been anyone but Buddy in the Sunset Motel, MASK would have lost an agent. On the other hand, as much as Matt hated what had happened and worried about the long-term effect on Buddy's health, he couldn't help but guiltily feel a small sense of hope blossom from the whole mess. )

For just a moment, he wondered if this had been some kind of drill – and if it had been, had he failed it? – but then he saw the expressions on the faces of the others and he felt the bottom of his stomach drop. )

( He had been waiting for the mid-morning flight from Washington DC for over an hour and it was beginning to grate on his nerves. By rights, he should have already been back in Boulder, helping Alex with Bruce and Buddy's introduction to the ins and outs of working for MASK. But no. Instead of that, he was stuck in Denver International Airport, waiting for a plane that, at this point, he was beginning to doubt had even so much as left the capital! )

( The bar was only moderately busy as Buddy entered. A handful of people making an early start to their weekend. That suited him just fine. He didn't normally drink, but after the past two weeks, getting very, horribly drunk held an appeal. Maybe that way he'd be able to forget the mess his life was in. Maybe. )

( At that moment, conversation had to stop as the band came out on stage and Matt got his first look at the band. The bass player, drummer and keyboard player all looked faceless and bland, which didn't exactly inspire much confidence in Matt that he was going to enjoy the concert. Then they started to play, and he guessed that all three had probably been hired for their talent rather than their looks. And then the lead singer/lead guitarist took to the stage and Matt stopped wondering where the band were going to get any kind of stage presence. )
